The Importance of A Tech Detox

You Need A Break

I have talked about organisation, staying focused and how you can get things done. There is something however, that is just as important that we tend to overlook. Something that is arguably even more important than all the planning and organisation in the world.

As children of the digital age, a majority of our time is spent on one screen or another. Be it for work, communication or socialisation. We spend a lot of time on our screens.

And too much of anything isn't good. We may not notice it in the moment, but later on the effects will be felt.

What is a Tech Detox?

A tech detox or digital detox is where someone stops using technology. The length and extent of the detox is individual specific. It can be a complete cut off from all things tech and in other instances a setting aside specific times or days where one is not using any tech.

Even what I mentioned in Notifications - The Enemy In Your Pocket is a type of detox.

Why Should You Detox?

Incredible as it may be, technology and the internet are stressful. The constant barrage of notifications, the glare of a monitor, that nagging curiosity of wanting to know what's going on.

All those things are not good and can lead to serious problems later on.

Excessive use of tech can affect your mental health, how you sleep and even how you balance things in your life.

Benefits of A Tech Detox

While it may not seem like a good thing to be away from your devices, there are some benefits to being away:

  • Improve mental health: The less you feel like you have to be abreast of everything, the more your mental state improves.
  • Reduce stress: The less you use, the more calm you have and the less stressful life becomes.
  • Enhance sleep: Limiting how much tech you expose yourself to will improve your sleep and rest patterns immensely.

How to Detox?

As I mentioned, there are several ways you can take a break from tech. Here are some examples:

  • Set Limits: This is your conscious decision as to when and how long you use your devices and are on the internet.
  • Turn off Push Notifications: Your phone's notifications are your enemy, I have said this already. Reducing the number of them you get is a way you can detox.
  • Meet Up With Friends: We are social creatures. Spending time with other people in a social setting is a great way to detox.
  • Make It Your Own: Detoxing, is first and foremost about you and your wellbeing. How you decide to do it is up to you.

Unshackle yourself from your devices, take back control.
